Our Story

Shop Sweet began in early 2013 as a start-up online store offering limited edition products designed and marketed by Sweet Briar students enrolled in select Business Department courses. Each semester, student teams shepherded one or more products from the idea stage all the way through the manufacturing, marketing and sales processes. As Shop Sweet participation grew in popularity, the team expanded beyond Business majors to include any student wishing to volunteer her time and talents. By May 2015, more than two dozen Sweet Briar students were Shop Sweet alumnae and contributed mightily to the growth of the unique business model that is a hybrid of academic theory and internship experience.

Fall 2015 was a time of change at Sweet Briar College, and Shop Sweet grew too! We stepped up our game by taking the lead in merchandising on campus. In partnership with the Book Shop, we launched a streamlined wholesaling process to offer new products and product lines to the Sweet Briar family both on campus and online. In partnership with the Alumnae Alliance, we launched Daisy's List to showcase a single online catalogue of fundraisers run by students, alumnae and College supporters. We began the process of expanding the Business Department lab offerings, allowing for upper-level coursework and research in accounting and marketing where academic theory can be applied to Shop Sweet operations. Over the 2015-2016 academic year we implemented our expanded business model in partnership with The Book Shop and The Alumnae Alliance.

Currently, Shop Sweet aims to provide the product analysis and marketing strategy and implementation that would normally be contracted to an outside firm. Increasing the Book Shop's bottom line and growing it as a source of auxiliary income for the College is a top priority for us. Our primary goal will always be the real-world application of Business Department coursework, providing yet another way for Sweet Briar students to become women who make a significant impact on their world.
